is to be an athlete. Like so many things in life nothing can be that simple. There is a "mess" that comes with it, and for BOTH genders. Often for girls it involves dealing with sexism, bullying, and harassment about their gender. For boys it's can bullying from teammates regarding talent or performance. And all they are trying to do is play a sport they love.
One way to counter the mess is to value sportsmanship. By definition sportsmanship is the fair and generous behavior or treatment of others, especially in a sports contest.
Here at Huntress Foundation we promote sportsmanship along with the competitive spirit. Without sportsmanship though the competitive spirit becomes sour and can often lead to burn out for all athletes. Young athletes quit long before their time, missing out on valuable lessons that sports teach to help them navigate the rest of their lives. But we have the power to change this.
